A Hopeful View

 


It is evident from all of the posts on my FB Feed today that the Big Event on the 240th day of 2021 was moving Alexa into her sophomore year living space in anticipation of next week's start of classes.  And, as I sat at her desk, on 8/28/2021, hot and sweaty and tired and sore, I looked out her window and had A Hopeful View!  Out this window, you can see a lot relating to the legacy of our family at Penn.  There is Hill House, my first year dorm (moved in 35 years ago!), there is Bennett Hall, the former home of the College for Women, from which my mom graduated in 1965.  To the left of Bennett, there is the Engineering Quad, which includes the Moore Building where my mom and my dad did their graduate studies.  And in the far distance rises the new pavilion of HUP, where Sarah worked after graduation and where both Alexa and Anna were born (that building is visible from the room, but not in this picture).  I hope Alexa has a wonderful year this year and that Penn is everything she hoped (and maybe even more).  I hope she enjoys campus life at Penn as much as I did.  I hope that campus life stays, well, like campus life should be and there are few (if any) disruptions.  I have a lot of hopes and dreams for Alexa's time at Penn, most of them that her hopes and dreams are fulfilled, whatever they might be.  Here's to a good year in 21-22, ON CAMPUS!

Checklist Hopes

I had ten items on my checklist for the 108th day of 2021.  And, yes, even on a Sunday, I was trying to be productive on 4/18/2021.  These items ranged from the mundane (completing my workplace timesheet and taking a pile of magazines to my campus office) to maintenance (changing oil in the snackstand fryer) to Mustangs (i.e. a fun softball game).  And I got home, and looked at my checklist, and realized I completed 7.5 of 10!!  So I have checklist hopes to complete the last 2.5 items before I get to bed (but I AM running low on time) and continue to be productive in the coming week.  Hope ya'll are being productive too!

Listening Hopes

I like to talk.  And, since I have a booming voice, often, when I talk, other voices may get drowned out.  SO, on the 305th day of 2021, I found myself in a position where I needed to listen.  And because I listened (actively) on 11/1/2021, when I did speak, it was effective, even though I tried to modulate my volume.  I therefore am filled with listening hopes.  Active listening is SO important.  I hope I can continue to remember that and listen more and talk less.  Not sure I can do it, but I sure can try!

Bacon Hopes

  So, it was not Chris Carter who informed me that the 364th day of 2021 is BACON DAY , no he is on vacation from Breakfast with the Beatles so I had to go looking online for inspiration for today's hopeful reflection.  But, once I found out on 12/30/2021, it gave me bacon hopes.  Honestly, not hopes for more bacon (not that this would be bad at all), but for the fact that the team on my project is connected by one of our colleague's love of bacon.  AND, even though John Goerke is no longer on the project, through FB, we stay connected with jokes about bacon, posts about bacon (such as this one), and just plain fun banter.  And, as the project is (finally) closer to the finish than it is to the start, I am hoping that this, and other inside jokes, can keep us connected even after the project is over and done with.  Anyone who knows me knows that I do not like saying goodbye.  SO, here's hoping that bacon keeps us connected.
